A former Stanford University President, a pioneer in computer science, a world-renowned entrepreneur, and the chairman of Google’s parent company ‘Alphabet’. It’s almost unfathomable to believe that we are talking about the achievements and identities of just one person, but we are. That person is the great John Hennessy. Dubbed the ‘Godfather of Silicon Valley’, Hennessy joined the faculty of Stanford University in 1977, before starting his own company, MIPS Computer Systems, in the 1980s. During which he introduced new technology which revolutionized the computing industry by increasing performance while simultaneously reducing costs. He rose up through the academic ranks at Stanford and then served as president from 2000 to 2016 — a period during which companies founded by university alumni took the tech world by storm. He became the non-executive board chair at Alphabet, where he successfully navigated leadership transitions, the evolving world of tech and passionately worked within the field of higher education.
